Learning Machine Vibration Analysis using SpectraQuest MFS

Course Objective

  • To develop an understanding of how to configure, setup, and design experiments using the SpectraQuest Machinery Fault Simulator (MFS) to support controlled vibration studies; and
  • To provide tools and techniques for analyzing and correcting machinery malfunction.

Course Description

  • The basics of experimental design;
  • Instrumentation and wiring of the MFS to collect appropriate data;
  • Shaft alignment and balancing basics;
  • The correct mounting of transducers, configuring the machine for various studies including misalignment, unbalance, rolling element and sleeve bearing faults, resonance, belt drive issues, gearing defects, induction motor defects, reciprocating issues, etc;
  • Data collection and the display of waveforms and spectra using VibraQuest software;
  • Transient study procedure (startup and coast down);
  • Impact test procedure;
  • Fault introduction to components;
  • Signal processing overview and advanced analysis technique; and
  • Damping and application.

This “hands-on” course is intended to make customers not only familiar with but also comfortable in the application of the MFS and other SpectraQuest simulators. It is performed in a classroom setting with workstations arranged in a client/server setting for configuration of controlled experiments. Students will be placed in groups to acquire data from different experiments and share their analysis with each other for enhanced discussion. Workstations will consist of access to an MFS and other simulators, a variety of fault kits, a 16-channel data acquisition system, software for simulating signal processing concepts, training and data analysis software, sensors, cables, and necessary accessories such as a tachometer, strobe, etc. All PCs will be networked for an open exchange of data and enhanced discussion.

Throughout the course, tutorials will be provided on the following topics:

  • Basics of signal processing;
  • Wavelet transform and application for fault diagnosis; and
  • Damping and vibration control.
